Worst Baker But Best Play Dough Maker

I am possibly the worst baker in Norway but somehow, to my husband’s amazement, I decided one day to try make play dough with my kids. It turned out better than any cake I have ever tried to make and it’s much softer and lasts longer than store bought play dough.

Best of all, it was a good activity with the kids and provided hours of entertainment once it was made.

So pop on your kid’s aprons and let’s get making play dough.

You’ll need:

  • 2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar (called kremotartari in Norway and you can get it at pharmacies)
  • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
  • food colouring 

Method:

  • Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
  • Add food colouring to the boiling water then into the dry ingredients (colour optional)
  • Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
  • Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency! (If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right).

And there you have it! Hours of entertainment for the little ones and a feeling of accomplishment for you. Now time for a glass of wine!
